Kirche Groß Lüben - About Groß Lüben ABOUT GROß LÜBEN Welcome to Groß Lüben ! Groß Lüben is located in the heart of biosphere reserve “Elbaue” in Prignitz County of the Federal State Brandenburg. It was founded about 1200 by German settlers and first mentioned in 1339. The village is a place with rural landscape and recreation, and an active village of 370 residents. Situated 2 km west of the town of Bad Wilsnack, Groß Lüben is about 17 km from Perleberg (district town) and Wittenberge (Elbe-harbour and ICE-railway station), and about 4 km from the beautiful Elbe river. Conveniently located near the railway station in Bad Wilsnack, the village is an ideal home base from which to take advantage of the natural resources of biosphere reserve and cultural and recreational activities in the Prignitz District. Timber-framed houses or brick buildings are the traditional architectural styles.  To find some culture, you needn't look far.  The 250-seat Church, operated by the local parish and the supporting association called “Förderverein Kirche Groß Lüben e.V.”, presents concerts, readings, talks and exhibitions regularly.  In the Tourist Office in Bad Wilsnack you can obtain information about current events in the region generally. Groß Lüben is also home for several businesses and services such as a garage, hotel, restaurant, ice- café and a veterinary. Unfortunately, there are no shops in the village except a flower shop. More shopping facilities you can find nearby in Bad Wilsnack. Exploring the village, you will find the church, build in 1904 in place of a former old building from about 1500. The church lost its steeple in 1984 during a bad storm (see visitors information at the blackboard in front of the church).   Running north  from the centre of the village, the main street called Dorfstraße, you will find the Churchyard, established in the 19th century with a beautiful chapel. There are old and new graves to be found in the lime tree grove which give a good insight into the names and occupations of local people. Most are still familiar locally to this day. Unfortunately, the historic building at the north end of the Dorfstraße was demolished in 2006 because of its poor condition.  To the west of the exit of the village a riding school and a large tournament square are located.
